Creating a Workplace Culture in Which Women Can Advance
Join us as we discuss best practices for creating a culture for advancement of women in business featuring Krista Bourne, South Central Market President at Verizon Wireless, and past recipients of the ATHENA Organizational Leadership Award.
Krista Bourne will open the program by sharing her experience at Verizon and how their culture helped her advance. In framing this discussion, Krista will draw on the best practices presented in the ATHENA Organizational Leadership Award and in the Women in the Workplace document.
Krista will serve as moderator for the following panel representing the three recipients of the ATHENA Organizational Leadership Award as they share the ways in which their organizations have created a workplace culture in which women can advance.

South Central Market President at Verizon Wireless
Krista Bourne is the president over a twelve state market for Verizon Wireless. In this role, Bourne leads the team responsible for delivering extraordinary customer service and growing the sales, marketing, operations and financial performance in the market. Krista’s experience with customer service began in Verizon’s mailroom reading and responding to customer feedback. A nationally revered voice known for impacting women and inspiring them to take action in their careers, Krista has been featured in Fortune Magazine and on other major platforms. Bourne has been an active member in her community and most recently served on the Boards of the Houston Area Women’s Center and Houston Technology Center.

Phillip Kilgore has been in the practice of litigation and labor and employment law in the Greenville office of Ogletree Deakins since 1986. Phillip has extensive litigation experience, representing clients in state and federal courts and administrative tribunals. He has handled a wide range of cases from traditional employment discrimination claims to tort claims and from environmental claims to shareholder derivative actions and minority shareholder disputes. Phillip also is an expert in advising clients on the protection of business assets and litigating acts of misappropriation.

Maurie enjoys working as a strategic partner with a diverse set of clients on sophisticated real estate transactions. She currently serves as Chairperson of the Executive Committee for Wyche, P.A. Recognized for her professional success, Maurie was named a Rising Star by South Carolina Super Lawyers, one of South Carolina’s Ten Emerging Legal Leaders by South Carolina Lawyers Weekly and one of Greenville’s Best and Brightest 35 and Under by Greenville Business Magazine. In the community, Maurie has served as the President for CREW Upstate and President of the YWCA of Greenville and currently serves as President of the City of Greenville Public Facilities Corporation.She also currently serves on the Boards of Clement’s Kindness, Culinary Partners, Inc. and on the Campaign Cabinet for the United Way of Greenville County. Maurie volunteers to assist fundraising efforts for the Greenville Hospital System Children’s Hospital and Cancer Survivor’s Park. She also is an adjunct faculty member for Clemson’s Master in Real Estate Development Program. Maurie is committed to many issues including the advancement of women and girls. She sponsored a showing of Girl Rising in the Upstate community and led a community panel discussion entitled “100 Percent” on how to effectively engage all of the talents of men and women in the workplace. She received her JD from Georgetown University Law Center and her Bachelor of Arts degree from Smith College.

Donald “Chip” Wiper, MD, joined Greenville Health System in 2009. In this role, Dr. Wiper shares system-wide responsibility for improving overall patient satisfaction. He also serves as chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and medical director of the GHS Women’s Hospital. In these roles, Dr. Wiper is responsible for all academic, medical staff and physician clinical affairs for inpatient and outpatient obstetrics and gynecology. He is also a practicing gynecologic oncologist. In addition to his roles at GHS, Dr. Wiper serves on the YMCA Camp Greenville Board of Advisors and is the medical director of Camp Greenville. Dr. Wiper holds the academic appointment of clinical professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville. Dr. Wiper earned a bachelor’s degree in German literature and economics at Bowdoin College and a medical degree from Case Western Reserve University Medical School. He completed his residency at the University Hospital of Cleveland and then completed a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
