Meet the Team: Matt Phillips

“By the grace of God, my kinfolk and I are Carolinians” – South Carolinians, to be exact. These opening lines to Ben Robertson’s memoir Red Hills and Cotton perfectly capture my feelings towards the place I call home. When I was nine years old, my family moved to a place we knew nothing about and were very nervous at what we would find. It didn’t take long for us to realize we were well at home; from Falls Park and Drive games to the community that never runs out of hospitality, we knew right away we wanted to stay in Greenville for good.

My name is Matt Phillips and I am a junior at Clemson University, studying Political Science. I first heard of the Greenville Chamber back in high school when I participated in their Youth Leadership Greenville program. I will never forget the memories I made nor the great friendship I formed from that experience. Last summer, I worked in Senator Tim Scott’s office in D.C. and enjoyed learning about how our state impacts policy on a national level. I hope to bring my experiences from that role to my new position and serve in a capacity much closer to home.

In my free time, I enjoy sports (football, basketball, baseball, and boxing), reading interesting books, and taking my black lab puppy out for long walks. My favorite place in the whole world is found off the Haywood Road exit to 385 as you drive towards downtown – if that sunset doesn’t make your heart soar, nothing will. On most weekday evenings I can be found serving Chick-fil-A at the Greenville Drive stadium, so please come out anytime and say hello!

This summer I have the opportunity to serve as the Business Advocacy Intern for the Greenville Chamber and am so excited to participate in this tremendous organization. I hope to walk away with a greater familiarity with my community and a better understanding of the ways that I can serve it in the future. I can’t wait to see what this summer has in store!
