A Path to Recovery

June 7th was a great day for a walk- low humidity, sun shining, and temps in the 70s! It was fitting that on this day, Leadership Greenville Class 43/Team 3 celebrated the completion of the brand new walking path for the residents of Serenity Place (The Family Effect’s residential addiction treatment facility for women and their children) with a ribbon cutting and inaugural lap.

Some people may not realize that as part of Leadership Greenville (LG), you are not only committed to completing the 10 month program, you are also placed into teams and asked to select a project to complete during that year. From 48 project proposals submitted by nonprofits, our class selected three. Team 3 chose Serenity Place because we could see the value the walking path would have to both the women and children in recovery there.

Prior to the walking path, mothers and their children were walking and playing in the parking lot of the facility which was less than ideal for all involved. At the ribbon cutting ceremony Ashley- a recent graduate from Serenity Place- shared some of the benefits of the walking path saying, “The track has also given us a chance to get out and get a little exercise, whether for a pregnant woman trying to bring on labor, a new mom trying to get back into her size 9s, or a toddler or preschool mom trying to teach her child healthy habits while being able to soak up some Vitamin D at the same time.”

Team 3 hopes to continue our partnership with The Family Effect and do a beautification day on the path at least once a year to ensure the path remains a great place to exercise and enjoy nature. The walking path would not have been possible if it weren’t for our amazing team, generous sponsors, and excellent contractors! The opportunity to gather with mothers, children, and community leaders to walk the first “official” lap was the culmination of what has been an amazing experience.

Watch a video of Team 3 and our contractors hard at work here.

A new Leadership Greenville class is being carefully selected now and will soon be primed and ready to take on meaningful community projects. Please submit project applications here by June 30th.

If you missed the deadline to apply for Leadership Greenville Class 44, I recommend checking out Opportunity Greenville which occurs in October. Learn more about Opportunity Greenville here.
