I’m a fan of Leadership Greenville and a proud graduate of Class 40. For my dissertation research completed in 2016, I conducted a qualitative case study to evaluate the efficacy of Leadership Greenville (LG), a 10-month leadership development program offered by Greenville Chamber. I wanted to know if the experience I had was felt by other graduates. LG’s goal is to help develop informed, committed, and qualified leaders by examining the issues affecting Greenville County.  Prior to this study, no significant data existed to address through comprehensive research, the value of the 40-year old program. To case study examined the impact of LG identifying emerging themes leveraging the following data sources: LG curriculum manual, interview with primary program administrator, and open-ended questionnaire completed by sample population of 13 graduates. The research question used to frame the study was, how does LG impact graduates? The analysis of the data focused on the value of LG in consideration of the program objectives to develop leaders in the areas of community engagement and professional leadership. The research conclusions revealed that the LG experience positively impacted graduates’ community knowledge and awareness and enhanced their leadership abilities. Graduates claimed to have gained greater networks, increased their civic involvement and community engagement, as well as achieved a broader perspective by having participated in LG.

This study represents an asset to existing research that examines leadership development and community engagement. These insights can add value and innovation in refining the LG experience.
