Local Elections are Set; Get Involved

National politics gets all the media attention, but it's what happens at City Hall that might have more impact on your business than any hot button issue in Washington (healthcare is an obvious exception).

While the national rhetoric ranges somewhere between the incoherent and the insane, Comedian Dave Chappelle showed up at his town council meeting a few weeks ago to speak about a policing matter from back in January. I'm not here to comment on that incident, but a few his words to the council were amazing:

"I would beseech the council to look deeply and to look hard because this is a golden opportunity. Literally you could kill the game. In this Trump era, there's an opportunity to show everybody that local politics reigns supreme. We can make our corner of the world outstanding."

The sentiment that Chappelle shared is something that I have preached for years on this blog.

Filing just closed for our City of Greenville elections. Who were the people who stepped up to make our corner or the world outstanding?

Council At-Large (Open): John DeWorken (R), Russell Stall (D)

Council District 2: Lillian Brock Flemming (D-Incumbent), Matt Cotner (R)

Council District 4: Will Brasington (R), David Sudduth (R-Incumbent)

District 4 will be held as a Republican Primary on Tuesday, June 13th. The other two races will be held on Tuesday, November 7th. We'll write more about each of these folks in the coming weeks, but while we spend our time scurrying around worried about political outrage rehearsed for 24-hour news cameras, we have serious issues here at home to worry about.

Engage locally. Tune in and pay attention. These elections will have a fraction of the turnout from last November, but the direct impact on you and your business is ten times greater.
