Let's Play Ball

I believe in supporting organizations that put forth a concerted effort to offer opportunities of value that are relevant and of interest to underserved populations.

I feel compelled to talk about the Annual HBCU Classic presented by Michelin, taking place on Friday, April 15th at Fluor Field. This exciting college baseball game will be the backdrop for a celebration of diversity in the Upstate and Jackie Robinson Day. The action starts at 6 PM with a variety of exciting pregame activities and entertainment, followed by Claflin University taking on a Benedict College. Throughout the evening guests will enjoy great baseball, between inning fun and messaging around the value of athletics, character development and diversity. In addition to the HBCU game, high school athletes from schools like Carolina, Southside and Berea, kids from the City of Greenville Youth Baseball teams, drum line bands, in-game entertainment and post-game fireworks, plus special recognition throughout the evening for our Greenville Upstate Diversity Champions. I was honored to have been asked to throw the Ceremonial First Pitch as a way to put a spotlight on the mission and work the Chamber does in the space of diversity and inclusion.

Quality of life entails the level of entertainment available to communities. Diversity is essential to a thriving, vibrant economy. To be a community that attracts diversity to the area, we must have diversity in our entertainment options. Such an opportunity as the HBCU Classic is an economic driver to our area. When organizations put forth such a concerted effort to appeal to the interest of key underserved communities, there should great enthusiasm for the event from corporate partners, diversity advocacy groups and leaders, community organizations, schools, churches and many others across the community. I encourage anyone looking for an evening of great and affordable entertainment to consider this opportunity. I especially encourage members of the minority communities to support this event.
