Q: What is the key differentiator in job success?

A: In the balance between IQ and EQ (Emotional Intelligence), Melanie Bargar says the scales tip decisively to EQ. Sure you need the right technical skills to do the job. But when other professionals also can meet these requirements, getting the job or the promotion you want often depends on your EQ.

According to a study by Leadership IQ, 46% of new hires fail within 18 months.  Only 11% fail for lack of skills; 89% fail based on poor interpersonal skills (lack of coachability, emotional intelligence, motivation, and appropriate temperament).

The clear message?  Assessing and improving your soft skills is key to improving career success.  To this end, attendees at this month's Sales Roundtable completed a self-assessment on soft skills.  But the real challenge was the assignment suggested: Now take time to ask friends, family, or co-workers to assess you using the same inventory.
