Building Capacity One MBE at a Time

Not pictured: Olivia Decastro (A Public Affair), Ramon Nieves (Unicomm Media Group) and Tim Pecoraro (theideagroup)."][/caption] The Minority Business Accelerator (MBA) is a program of the Greenville Chamber, which actively seeks to improve the capacity of minority owned firms by increasing recognition of the value of minority businesses as suppliers, strategic partners, and, ultimately, as effective engines for job growth, economic development and wealth creation. MBA prepares high potential minority-owned businesses for accelerated growth and expansion through business development services, mentoring, targeted training, access to large corporations for partnership opportunities and custom roadmap to sustainable growth. The MBA helps MBEs overcome growth barriers creates access to new opportunities for ethnic diverse businesses, connecting them with the right resources and results-driven strategies to fuel their growth and build capacity. On December 5th, the Greenville Chamber had the pleasure of orienting 16 Upstate MBEs to the MBA program. Leading up to this kick off session, the MBA operating team has been diligently working towards the completion of the Pre-Launch Phase, which involves, 1) developing the program framework, 2) identifying, vetting and on-boarding prospective MBEs, and 3) preparing for the actual Launch Phase of the program. The 12-month programming period will begin January 1, 2014 and run through December 31, 2014.The MBA Kick Off Session provided an overview of the long-range program of capacity development objectives, which will be covered over the subsequent 12-months. The day consisted of training on the MOD Link tracking system, reviewing assessment results, introducing the 2014 capacity building curriculum, and networking. Over 20 MBEs were vetted for participation in the 2014 MBA program. These firms represent a diverse cross section of industries, business size, and ethnic makeup. Seventeen of those vetted were selected to participate. The majority of these firms fall into the “High Potential: Intermediate” category, which consists of those with average annual revenues ranging between $100K and $4.9MM. The MBA program is designed to build capacity, cultivate a more inclusive business environment, and drive better economic outcomes throughout the Upstate of South Carolina – in terms of job creation and retention. In order to achieve these objectives, the following programmatic approach has been established:
  • Business Assessments: Each MBE will be provided with a comprehensive business assessment, aimed at helping each participant to better understand their business’ current business health and future potential.
  • Quarterly Capacity Building Workshops: These sessions will be designed to strengthen the critical thinking skills of participants within the program. In addition, these sessions will entail introducing participants to conventional and innovative business growth and operating strategies. They will also provide networking opportunities aimed at expanding participant’s access to opportunities.
  • Networking Opportunities: The MBA will provide several unique opportunities for participants to engage directly with local corporations, interested in doing business with diverse suppliers. These opportunities will exists through:
    • Quarterly Capacity Building Sessions, where each session will be hosted by a local corporation. The goal of these sessions will be to expose all participants to the hosting corporation, and introduce them to key procurement / purchasing agents of the company. Where possible, the MBA will attempt to arrange opportunities MBEs to make presentations / pitches directly to the hosting corporations.
    • Quarterly Networking Events, where the MBA will facilitate unique events specifically aimed at fostering knowledge transfer and interaction between MBEs, corporations and other key community-based stakeholders.
